Venue: Blue Hill at Stone Barns
Every so often, a wedding comes along that pushes the Barn Door Blooms team to new heights of creativity and precision. Most recently, that was Alexis and Alex’s November wedding at the prestigious Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Update NY. This was no ordinary celebration – it was an artfully orchestrated symphony of seasonal elements, bespoke details, and meticulous timing that transformed one of upstate New York’s most iconic venues into an enchanted autumn evening.
The Vision
When Alexis and Alex first came to us (through a referral from another cherished client), they had already secured their dream venue. But they needed someone who could bring their vision to life while honoring the natural beauty and farm-to-table heritage of Blue Hill at Stone Barns. They dreamed of a celebration that would embrace November’s rustic elegance in a fresh way.

The couple’s love for their Vermont ski retreat influenced our design choices, as did Alexis’s affinity for lavender – which became a key color in our palette. We wove these personal touches throughout their celebration, creating a sophisticated design that felt both elevated and authentically them.
The Design Journey
Our process began with an intimate site visit, where both families walked the grounds together. We took in every corner of those beautiful historic buildings – measuring spots for candles, noting how the light would change throughout the evening, thinking through how guests would move from ceremony to dinner. These early details made all the difference in creating that perfect flow.
The design called for an intricate blend of florals and carefully sourced vessels. We procured vintage pieces from high-end garden centers and local antique shops, including exquisite Campo de’ Fiori terra cotta vessels that added Old World charm to our contemporary arrangements. Each element was chosen not just for its beauty, but for how it would contribute to the overall story we were telling.
The Ceremony
The light at Blue Hill gets dreamy at dusk, and we ran with it. The courtyard took on this cozy glow as we lit lanterns down the aisle. By the time guests arrived, the sun was doing that perfect golden-hour thing it does, and the moon was just starting to show up. Pure magic for their vows.

We included thoughtfully placed seasonal elements – heirloom pumpkins and gourds chosen for their sophisticated, muted colors. Each piece spoke to Blue Hill at Stone Barns’ agricultural heritage while keeping that luxurious feel we were after. Mixed with the candlelight and autumn blooms, it created exactly the elevated atmosphere Alexis and Alex wanted.

The Reception
Inside the historic hay loft, we layered arrangements at different heights between vintage vessels and glowing candles. Each table felt both elegant and perfectly at home at Blue Hill.
Individual sprigs of rosemary at place settings nodded to the venue’s culinary legacy, while custom acrylic maple leaves served as place cards – a subtle reference to the couple’s love of Vermont.

We had so much fun with the escort card display – this gorgeous old wooden table we found became the perfect backdrop for our mix of vintage vessels and seasonal flowers. The colors just felt right, weaving from deep lavenders into those cozy rust tones and soft sage greens. It hit that sweet spot between classic fall vibes and something really fresh.

Behind the Scenes
What guests didn’t see was the intricate choreography happening behind the scenes – a carefully orchestrated performance that began long before the first guest arrived. Our team, led by our talented designer Meg, operated with precision, each member knowing their exact role and timing.

In the weeks leading up to the big day, we laid out every vessel and stem in our studio, testing different arrangements until the design clicked. Working with our seasonal palette, we mapped how lavender would fade to rust then sage across the tables. Each vase found its perfect spot – some tall, some nestled low – creating the effortless flow we were after.

Behind the scenes, our team moved like clockwork – something guests never see but that makes all the difference. While the venue was still quiet, Meg led our crew through the morning, each of us knowing exactly where to be and what to do. There’s an art to the setup that most people don’t think about – timing every delivery, coordinating with venue staff, and making sure each detail lands in place before those first guests arrive.

For the table settings alone, our process resembled a choreographed dance. We worked in perfect coordination with the venue staff, ensuring our floral installations were in place before a single wine glass was set. It’s these behind-the-scenes details – like timing the placement of arrangements to protect delicate stemware – that showcase the level of thought and care that goes into every aspect of our designs.

As Alexis shared after the wedding, “Every detail you helped bring to life made the vision a reality, and we couldn’t be happier with the result!”
